S-24 Anti-Imperialist Committee

The S-24 Anti-Imperialist Committee (S24AIC) summarized the experience of the Seattle Anti-Imperialist Contingent and the reformist ANSWER rally and march which took place on 24 September.

S24AIC is calling for a public meeting to be held on 9 October at 2:00PM in the Capitol Hill (Seattle) Library's upstairs conference room. The meeting's topic will be What's Next for the Anti-Imperialist Movement?

Introduction  •  Getting Involved  •  What's new?  •   Meetings  •  Initial "Call to Seattle Anti-Imperialists"

Introduction

The S-24 Anti-Imperialist Committee (S24AIC) is a loose group of anti-imperialist activists in and around Seattle, WA. The purpose of our committee is to organize an
anti-imperialist feeder march and contingent on September 24, a "national day of protest" called by International A.N.S.W.E.R. We believe this joint action will help to lay the basis for future anti-imperialist actions and hasten the arrival of a world free of imperialism.

We believe that the only way to fundamentally end war is to do away with the political and economic system of imperialism (monopoly capitalism) which gives rise to one war after another. We believe that this is only possible through the independent political action of the working class and its allies. Imperialist bourgeois politicians cannot be relied upon to eliminate the system that they themselves serve!

S24AIC is not a front or a mouthpiece for any other organization or political party. Furthermore, our politics (and "agendas") are right out in the open. People are encouraged to examine our statements and compare them with other formations claiming to espouse anti-imperialist politics.

S24AIC can be contacted via email: s24aic@gmail.com

Getting Involved

Creating a world without imperialism takes work. Building a real anti-imperialist movement takes work. Fortunately, there are many different ways of contributing to the development of the anti-imperialist movement. Our purpose is not to list each and every one of these, but to offer a few suggestions for Seattle anti-imperialists looking to get involved.

One obvious way is to help promote the upcoming anti-imperialist march. PDF files of the poster can be downloaded
here. Supporters are encouraged to post these on electrical poles, in workplaces, schools, cafes, etc.

Finally, we hope to see you at the anti-imperialist feeder march and the anti-imperialist contingent within the A.N.S.W.E.R. march!

What's new with S24AIC?

Since our last planning meeting, organizers and other participants have been actively postering and leafletting in support of this event. Additionally, we have gotten our march listed on
Seattle's Independent Media Center, SeattleActivism.org and the Seattle-area Peace & Justice Calendar.

The Anti-Imperialist Contingent has recieved a solidarity message from the Irish Republican Socialist Committees of North America (IRSCNA) on behalf of the Irish Republican Socialist Movement.

In these last few days, we strongly encourage anyone who'd like to see the emergence of a real Seattle anti-imperialist movement--truly independent of the bourgeoisie and its allies--to do whatever they can in spreading the word about this anti-imperialist feeder march and contingent.

September 10 Meeting - Results
Our second (and final) planning meeting was successfully held on September 10 at the Capitol Hill Library.

Unlike last time, the Seattle IMC editorial staff posted an
edited version of an article announcing the meeting in the IMC's center column. This helped to considerably increase our visibility, as did the meeting poster.

Below is a brief report written by Alex, a meeting participant. He posted this reply to Seattle IMC on September 15, 2005.

Report on the September 10th planning meeting

Report on the Sept 10th planning meeting for an anti-imperialist contingent march on September 24th.

This report is coming a few days late (and will be pretty short) due to the press of other issues, such as building for the actual march on September 24th. The meeting was a success, with several new people in attendance, having seen postings on indymedia, or flyers on Broadway. Because of the number of people at the meeting who had not participated in the previous meetings, we spent a significant amount of time talking about background, decisions which had been made previously, and getting a sense of where participants were coming from. There was pretty strong unity around the slogans (listed in the original post above), and the need to oppose the Democrats' support for the war. Because of the need to cover these questions, we were limited on time for other decisions, but we discussed the route we planned to take, selected two speakers, and divided up postering to build for the march. One person had been putting up posters at Edmunds CC already, others volunteered to poster in various neighborhoods around town. Already at least a few hundred posters have gone up around town, and people on the streets who have seen posters being put up appear to be aware of this anti-imperialist contingent march, and say they are planning to attend.

August 13 Meeting - Results

Participants at the August 13 meeting decided to call for an anti-imperialist feeder march which would join with A.N.S.W.E.R.'s march at Westlake on September 24. The anti-imperialist contingent will also participate in the A.N.S.W.E.R. march from Westlake down to the Federal Building.

A significant portion of the meeting was deciding which slogans to organize around. Through friendly debate and struggle, we were able to reach a fairly high level of unity around slogans which do an excellent job of expressing our firm anti-imperialist line.

One participant at the meeting, Ben Seattle, wrote a short article which contains, among other things, a summary of what happened at the meeting.

Initial "Call To Seattle Anti-Imperialists"

The following call was posted to the
Seattle Independent Media Center on August 2, 2005. Since the Seattle IMC editorial staff ignored all polite requests to post it to the center column, it was re-posted on August 8, 2005.

As of now, it is still a "mystery" why the Seattle IMC editorial staff would refuse to even communicate with us on this issue, let alone co-operate. However, this does underscore the need for anti-imperialist activists to work towards the development of truly independent news outlets not dominated by sectarian and reformist politics.

Call to Seattle Anti-Imperialists

Planning meeting for an anti-imperialist feeder march and contingent at the September 24 anti-war demonstration.
    August 13, 2005
    2:00 P.M.
    Capitol Hill Library (Upstairs)
    425 Harvard Ave. E.

While seeking to unite with other anti-war activists who have not yet been won to an anti-imperialist position, we feel it is crucial to put our energies into building the anti-war movement along anti-imperialist lines. We need an anti-war movement that stands with the masses of people around the world while telling the masses the truth about the economic system of imperialism (monopoly capitalism) which is the source of one war after another.

If we want such a movement, then we ourselves need to work to build it. The liberals and their opportunist friends will never do it. It is simply impossible to defeat imperialism without understanding what it is and how it needs to be fought--through the independent political action of the masses, particularly the workers, oppressed nationalities and youth. It is not enough to say this, only to turn around and objectively promote lesser-evil politics or let liberal imperialists address anti-war rallies without being criticized.

This does not mean that anti-imperialists should isolate ourselves from the broader anti-war movement. Just the opposite. While uniting with the broader movement in our opposition to the war in Iraq and other crimes of imperialism, anti-imperialists must bring forward our own political line through publications, mass meetings and demonstrations (independent actions, feeder marches and participation in anti-war events organized by other political trends). We must consistently expose bourgeois misleaders who seek to channel the anti-war movement into electoral politics, letter-writing and even support for a "kinder, gentler" imperialist occupation, such as one administered by the United Nations.

For anti-imperialists, it is of crucial importance to support the legitimate Iraqi resistance (including armed struggle) while at the same time opposing the Ba'athist and Islamic fundamentalist elements who have sadly come to dominate much of the resistance. Our unity is with the efforts of the exploited and oppressed Iraqi masses to build up a revolutionary-democratic current in the struggle against U.S. imperialism and its Iraqi allies. Moreover, successes in putting the anti-war movement in this country on a firm anti-imperialist foundation contributes to fostering and encouraging movement in this direction among the Iraqi toilers.

Groups such as the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) and Workers World Party (WWP) of A.N.S.W.E.R. fully support the struggle of the out-of-power Ba'athists and clerical reactionaries and call this anti-imperialism. Furthermore, while they denounce the imperialist Democratic Party in their papers and magazines, they're famous for watering down their rhetoric at mass A.N.S.W.E.R. demonstrations---where the speakers platform is generally packed with liberals such as hand-picked "community leaders", labor union bureaucrats and Democratic politicians who promote imperialist politics and seek to turn anti-war activists into election fodder.

Seattle anti-imperialists cannot effectively develop and defend the anti-war movement against imperialism, opportunism and the wrecking influence of the Democratic Party without putting our heads together to plan and organize. This is the objective for August 13.
